More thoughts on change in Doctor Who

Having refreshed my memory on more older Doctor Who (1963), I notice that many of the stories, at least up to the early eighties, have some elements I like: they at least try to explore some science fiction or otherworldly idea and, narratively, they often turn on a battle of wits rather than some new development that wasn't at all anticipated in earlier scenes.

Nonetheless, while my recent entry on this topic was much about drawing contrast, I must give the current Doctor Who (2005) at least some credit: the latest episode did clearly engage with a science fiction idea, albeit one so well-trodden it's become a trope, there was indeed some battle of wits, and the Daleks no longer seemed absurdly powerful. A couple of aspects were less what I would wish but I do try to appreciate silver linings.

I would like to get Brit Box so we could watch the latest. I bought the first season DVD set for the latest Doctor, though I heard the second season was widely regarded as not very good. Somehow we failed to finish it, but that was deep into '20, IIRC.

There have certainly been runs of mediocrity in recent times. I have various criticisms but they're probably mostly adequately summarized by my more recent entries on it. Basically: I watch in hope, praying that it's not so bad it inches toward cancellation, because I want it to keep having the chance to be good again, and do justice to its actors, it's sometimes briefly at least okay even more recently. Back in the mid-eighties it kind of dipped into starting years of having many bad scripts and I'd rather like the same not to happen again. Good luck obtaining it anyway! I'm getting it from BBC America on Sling Blue.
