Unusual, pleasant breakfast
Mar. 21st, 2021 12:48 pmFor breakfast today, I ate a sandwich with corned beef, tomato, and English mustard, together with an iced ring donut, a bowl of hot oatmeal with a dash of syrup, and a little brown ale. It's nice to treat myself to a change sometimes. For lunch, a large fillet of orange roughy waits in the refrigerator.
I tend to have hot oatmeal more when my bottle of milk is fresh. I find that, once it is a few days old, milk tastes worse if heated.
In the US, corned beef is associated with St Patrick's Day, but I think it to be by coincidence that it revisited my diet now. Given the Troubles, that feast is not something I ever felt part of: being English, it felt improper to be appropriating the fun aspects while being associated with the other.
Update: The orange roughy was very good. I accompanied it with some Manhattan clam chowder.

Date: 2021-03-21 06:33 pm (UTC)I live with a man whose family was very, very Irish. Years ago we were in London for the holidays and everywhere we went he got stopped, and he was always searched getting on and off planes. We understood. Patrick Payne is just too much of a trigger for the poor English.
