As a teenager I could easily swallow the usual kinds of pills. I don't know what changed but now the disk-shaped pills are liable to get stuck in my throat on the way down: I much prefer the lozenge-shaped ones that have only one large dimension instead of two though it would be nice if it were easier to tell in advance before buying. Perhaps chopping a pill in half does not greatly change its dissolution rate: its absorption profile may be similar if the length of the smallest dimension remains unchanged. Let's hope so.

When we lived in Cameroon when I was a child, we had to take these incredibly bitter antimalarial pills each day. My sister and I avoided the nasty taste by taking a mouthful of water, then dropping in the pill before swallowing. I still take pills that way :-)
