Steroids' utility

Steroids seem to be a miracle drug. They are prescribed for everything from topical application to awkward skin infections to injection into chronically troubled joints and are typically promptly and lastingly effective. A little searching online doesn't really tell me much about how and why they are so diversely useful.

A significant number of conditions are related to inappropriate inflammation and/or immune activity, and steroids suppress both of these.
