Trackpads and buttons on laptop computers
Nov. 14th, 2016 07:30 pmMy Asus Zenbook has a trackpad that is in one way new to me: while its whole smooth surface can be used to move the mouse pointer it nonetheless has clickable buttons underneath. I am not a great fan: I sometimes click on the right button and it behaves like a left click and occasionally an attempt to click also makes the mouse pointer jump to the bottom of the screen. I don't know if it's fundamentally a tricky technology where whatever the gain is isn't worth the confusion or if there is a bit of bugginess somewhere in the drivers: I recall I needed at least Linux 4.5 to use the trackpad at all. Mostly it works but I would appreciate more reliability.
