When I actually managing, which has not been for some years now, I quite like decision-making meetings to happen by mid-morning and update/progress meetings later in the afternoon. I can then circulate my decision-thoughts by close-of-business on the previous day so people have had some time to catch up with mail and glance things over before the actual meeting; also, I have plenty of working hours left in the day to act on the meeting's outcomes. For update/progress stuff I prefer people to have a bit more time to finalize where they're up to and listening to them can be a bit of winding down toward the end of the day.

However, in thinking about this, I wonder if this reflects my own disposition as a morning person. I am quite actively getting on with things from first arriving at my desk at the start of the day, rather than slowly creaking into life after some coffees. If I am going to have a slow period then it is probably going to be early afternoon. Perhaps my above reasoning works well for me but not so well for others. It may also bear no relation to conventional practice.
