When I use the cross-trainer my body heats up substantially. Even though I am exercising out in the garage in the early morning with my shirt off, after the first ten minutes or so sweat is starting to drip off me. Cooling is a principal reason for my favoring swimming instead. Still, we are told that winter is coming, and that gives me plenty of time to become used to the cross-trainer before the advent of warm weather.

I am somewhat reassured to read about heat acclimatization. Apparently one's muscles can even adjust to express more heat shock proteins and, probably with more relevance to me, one's body can learn to sweat earlier and less saltily and generally to achieve lower body temperature and heart rate by means such as improving how one's heart moves blood around.

While my impression is that much of this research relates to people exercising in rather more challenging ways than I do, it is nonetheless encouraging to think that perhaps over the winter my body may be able to adapt so that I do not feel as awfully hot as I do now for the same degree of exertion. Or maybe I will simply get more used to it.
