Piano hands

I was trying a new tune tonight and soon hit a beat where the bass clef has a low A and middle C on the stave and the treble clef has E and A up on its stave. Is the choice of stave for showing a note meant to indicate which hand I should use? I can easily do C, E, A with my right hand but am I more properly expected to stretch my left from the low A to that C? Ouch.
