Some years ago, we rented a Mazda to drive around North Island. Sometimes it would randomly make this "ding-dong" noise. Eventually (after about a week) we caught it: it was the GPS, and when it did so it was also briefly flashing a speed limit sign. What it thought the speed limit was, which quite often didn't line up with reality. I guess little changes...
