Glasgow Pride March

Last Saturday, we attended Glasgow's Pride March, arriving near the start just as it was setting off. Once the end reached us, we were able to head north and catch it a couple more times as it wove back and forth through the city centre.

I had not anticipated how uplifting I would find it to see so many people out and happy. The parade was very diverse but, more strikingly, huge, far larger than I had expected. Tens of thousands of people marched, later estimates suggested that the parade was around a mile long. As one group after another reached us, it just kept on coming.

There was some anger among the joy, there is still so far to go. Nonetheless, whether in celebration or defiance, it was a breath of fresh air to see so very many people able to be their various selves so publicly. The event felt like a most heartening marker on a long, hard journey.

I don't understand the anger. By their standards of 'I hate gay people' (not me, an example), then they have the right to say 'I hate straight people'. But they don't. Does this just make the anti-gay people more angry because they don't have a reflective surface to bounce off of and amplify their hatred?

My oldest niece is gay. When she announced that she was going to marry her girlfriend (it fell through), my dad said he wasn't going and my mom asked if my wife and I would take her to the wedding, which I told her we would gladly. My brother - he, on the other hand, said "I want to punch her in the face. Because if she wants to be a guy, she should be able to take a punch."

And he is a self-proclaimed christian.

I have been told by my sister that her kids want as little to do with my brother as possible because of things like this, and I give them that as much as I can. I want as little to do with my brother as possible because of things like this and other things in our past.

About a decade ago I attended a Pride Parade in NYC. I remember the feeling of great joy in the crowd, and how impressed I was by the people in uniforms from the police, fire department and other services marching in their uniforms.

It really was a special experience.

This sounds amazing. A good Pride march can be so uplifting.

That sounds as big as the Minneapolis Pride march. Yes, it's a good feeling to be there knowing that other attendees are glad that everyone is there too.
