COVID-19 lives under the rug

I experience ongoing dissonance. On the one hand, I read of abundant SARS-CoV-2 infection, reinfection, mutation, increasing clear incidence of long COVID, etc. On the other hand, nobody's wearing a mask and life continues as if it were the Before Times. It's unusual for me to have the sense of joining the Cassandras.

My fear is mostly that of chances of long-term effects, whether from the virus not being cleared from all tissues then reemerging, or simply from the organ damage it can cause. https://www.usnews.com/news/health-news/articles/2022-03-10/long-covid-has-become-the-pandemic-after-the-pandemic is the kind of thing that makes me want to be very cautious until the picture becomes clearer.
