I have been frustrated by how I am rather more productive at work than I am at home. One realization is that interruptions may be key: at work I have long blocks of time where I am not much pulled away from what I am doing. At home there are meals and other activities that I coordinate with my family. When I do get started on my own work and it is time to do something else, at that point I was enjoying my work and would have been fine to continue.

It's getting started that's the difficult part and that's why interruptions are costly. As I've mentioned previously, partly that's about learning to ignore my family and do what I would were they not around. Where there are concrete plans I can gladly fit in with them but I am still learning to change my habits so as to make my own way when I am not important to what others are doing, e.g., watching television that I can miss.
