I typically regard automated water and soap dispensers simply as means to frustrate me and prevent me from washing my hands properly. Where possible I use restrooms that offer manually operated sinks so that I need not learn the correct magical wave. Nonetheless, I have noticed that I am better at washing my hands at work than I once was (or something was recalibrated?); my hands previously had to adopt an awkward far-forward fingertips-down position to keep the water flowing. While I seem to have improved at simultaneously washing my hands while causing further water flow, rather than switching between a quick wash and trying to make more water issue, such improvement with experience is of no help to visitors of our building.

Detroit's McNamara terminal features washbasins that present me another kind of challenge. I have learned that many of these automated sensors require that my hand not only be present but also moving. It took few attempts for me to learn the wave to make soap come forth but rather more work for me to wave in such a way that my moving hand would be under the dispenser at the moment that the soap drops. At least those airport sinks avoid the usual British sin of having the water flow so near to the side of the sink that one does not quite have room to fit one's hands under it. (Sink plugs are not always provided.)

The ubiquity of these awful sensor-activated devices (and let's put aside the paper towel dispensers, air blowers and especially the automatically flushing toilets) makes me wonder if I could do with some training in what maybe everybody else can cope with. I don't notice much outcry; perhaps I missed the wrong day at school when we were trained in the proper fluid gestures. At least vampires aren't an issue in society; my difficulty in activating these devices could throw me under suspicion; just this week I heard suggestion that people unable to activate them do not have souls. Also, in connecting through Amsterdam I concede that Schiphol's sensor-activated washbasins are quite excellent for hand-washing so there are exceptions.
