An unexpected brightness

Looking north tonight the sky above the horizon is surprisingly bright beyond the Sidlaws. I rather doubt it's the bright lights of Coupar Angus or Blairgowrie but I would also expect the sun to set more south of Perth than some way north of it so maybe the Matrix broke. The brightness is more in the area I watch for the aurora borealis but it looks nothing like that.
