I write many journal entries about matters that bother me. More are coming but this evening it seemed appropriate to note some thoughts that I have found more agreeable.

I lived in Ohio for many years. The largely Republican state government put forward an amendment to the constitution that is aimed against gerrymandering and voters approved it by a large margin. Among so much bad news in recent times I welcome that gem.

Over here in Britain the Governor of the Bank of England continues to make sense. After how well Mark Carney did in Canada I was pleased he took the job: whatever I may think of Her Majesty's Government's fiscal policy I have at least been reassured that the central bank is in good hands.

More locally still, in Scotland the Western Isles' first mosque has opened. Given how Christian that area is I am pleased to see communities take such practical steps toward inclusion, helping Syrian refugees to observe Ramadan this year. I wonder what they made of the change from Syria to the Outer Hebrides.

Admittedly, that is not very local: I live on the other side of the country and drive back there tomorrow but it is not as if I have any news from the Ribble Estuary.
