Mentioning alcohol yesterday and having a coffee this morning reminded me that with such drinks I currently adopt a moderate position somewhere in between abstinence and pleasure. A couple of years ago I mentioned how we have a coffee pod machine; it is actually [personal profile] mst3kmoxie's but I use it more than she. I am in the habit of averaging around one pod each morning. Further, I have a drink of alcohol a couple of times per week, most commonly either a single of whisky or less than a pint of lager though I do also like those quarter-bottles of wine one can get. When other people are paying I will drink as much coffee or alcohol as comes: that happens rarely enough to not be worth watching for. Alcohol also makes a useful gift suggestion for when people wonder what to buy me: I drink whisky slowly enough that I rarely buy my own bottles.

On the one hand, I enjoy both coffee and alcoholic drinks and do not come close to excessive consumption of them. Indeed, a glance at the food log for my diet reports that I have not drunk anything alcoholic this past week so I suppose it can count as one of my checks that abstinence remains easy; I did have a bunch of that Shiraz a couple of weeks ago. On the other, I wonder how rational the social acceptance of them is and if it would be best to simply abstain from chemically addictive recreational psychoactive substances. Also, with alcohol being a carcinogen perhaps I ought to check if even low consumption presents some non-negligible increase in risk.

I don't present any conclusions here, I simply note that for now I have been a bit doubtful about drinking such nice things and my approach has been to have just a little in the hope that the cost of postponing discovery of the awful truth will thus be small.
