A successful art critic drew my attention to the leftmost shepherd in Nicolas Poussin's Et in Arcadia ego in saying that the figure punctuates the composition and gives it its emotional weight in their being plunged into deep, deep sadness. I look at the figure and it seems to me that the shepherd is wondering where a small insect on the ground went.
