Catherine O'Hara

Yesterday I was going to post the weird coincidence that Catherine O'Hara was a clue in the Thursday Globe crossword puzzle and then she died the next day (I am not implying foresight or causality). I didn't have much more to say, but in his little tribute this morning on NPR Scott Simon finished the list of her famous roles by playing a snippet of Kiss at the end of the rainbow from A Mighty Wind*. Here it is

[personal profile] sovay posted about Folkways records the other day. A Mighty Wind wasn't a direct parody of Folkways - part of it was a parody of the New Christy Minstrels, I think - but those of us who loved some of the folk scene also loved the film. It wasn't mocking as much as wry smiles.

I hit Agway and the Bakery while I was downtown. Then I had to hit the pharmacy because the dentist did send in a prescription for antibiotics for Pip’s tooth. I also stopped by the Town offices to pay property taxes and hit the bank drive-thru.

I did a load of laundry, hand-washed dishes, ran a load in the dishwasher, went for several walks with Pip/the dogs, cut up chicken for the dogs' meals, and scooped kitty litter. We had chicken and gravy on rice for supper.

I read a lot of fanfic and watched 9-1-1 and House Hunters International.

Temps started out at -4.9(F) (and dropped a tiny bit to -5.1 before I left the house) and reached 11.3. There was some sun, but also wind, so it felt so much colder.

Mom Update:

Mom sounded tired when I talked to her. I forgot to mention that she did talk to the Hospice nurse about her energy levels. The nurse talked to the doctor and they prescribed Prednisone for her. (A week to see how it works.) I thought it was odd, but google says it affects the adrenal gland? I’m not sure if that’s what is supposed to affect her energy? She first took it Thursday morning. I don’t know how long it takes to work, but it clearly wasn’t working as of today.

She had some good meals. Sister S was there and mom was expecting Sister A. My brother had called. The aunt and uncle who were supposed to visit never showed and didn’t call to tell her they weren’t coming, so she kind of kept expecting them to show up.

Due to strikes by Russia, there is a total blackout in Kyiv currently - dark, cold. The temperature outside there is about the same as the temperature outside my house, but I have heat and electricity inside. I was planning to take the bus to a memorial service this morning but am probably going to use the car instead. I am not tough, is what I'm saying.

due South: Ch-ch-changes by mizface

Fandom: due South
Characters/Pairings: Benton Fraser/Ray Kowalski, Ray Kowalski & Ray Vecchio, Diefenbaker, Buck Frobisher, Maggie McKenzie
Rating: Mature
Length: 26,124 for the main fic, 28,647 for the series
Content Notes: Creator chose not to warn. This has at least a hopeful ending, but the fic is about zombies and Ray kills and eats at least one victim, plus there are some slightly gross descriptions in places. Way less gore etc. than most zombie stories, though.
Creator Links: mizface on AO3
Themes: Crack treated seriously, Friends to lovers, Friendship, Complete AU, Zombies, (Not really) character death, Epistolary fic

Summary: Ray Kowalski thought he had an okay existence: he had a place to call home, didn't have to worry about a job, and nobody bothered him. If it wasn't for the fact that he was a zombie, things would have been pretty good.

Then he met very much alive Benton Fraser, and his whole world was turned upside down.

Reccer's Notes: And the trifecta of cracky fantasy creatures: zombies. This story's based on the movie Warm Bodies, which also takes the cracky zombie premise kind of seriously, in a romantic way. Zombies are usually shown as mindless ravening hordes, but in this story both Rays have been zombified but haven't completely lost themselves. Here, zombies are called "the infected", and both Rays begin to mysteriously improve across the story, regaining more speech and cognitive ability. Apart from the relationship with Fraser that develops - and we also access Fraser's POV from his journal entries - there's a nice friendship between the Rays. There's one major story, followed by a number of short fics adding to the 'verse. A rather lovely and poignant take on zombies, that more seriously explores a possible at least partial recovery from that state, and developing relationships.

Fandom: Stargate Atlantis
Characters/Pairings: John Sheppard/Rodney McKay, Katie Brown, David Parrish, Elizabeth Weir, Bates
Rating: Explicit
Length: 6499
Content Notes: No AO3 warnings apply
Creator Links: Hth on AO3
Themes: Crack Treated Seriously, First time, Friends to lovers, Humor, In vino veritas

Summary: Rodney toked pot that one time, but it never made him one of the cool kids.

Reccer's Notes: Okay, I'm stretching it a little thin in terms of the prompt, but any excuse to rec this charming, hot, and funny fic. The cracky premise is that Colonel John Sheppard, the military commander, is the drug czar of Atlantis, and Hth actually does sell it, while still keeping Sheppard in character. I'm very fond of "under the influence" stories, and this is lovely, as Sheppard inveigles Rodney to smoke pot with him and Rodney transforms from a pining nerd to being almost as cool as Sheppard. As so often, they've both been secretly attracted to each other for ages, and a bit of disinhibition (hitting Rodney harder as he's less used to it) speeds things along. It's a favourite story of mine with great dialogue, and a very fun read.

This takes the cake and is frankly callous and deeply racist. Excerpts from the BBC article:
Israel has only twice used the death penalty against a convicted prisoner. The last time was more than sixty years ago, to hang the notorious Nazi war criminal, Adolf Eichmann.

But in the wake of the Hamas-led attacks on 7 October 2023, Israel's deadliest ever day, there is a political push to pass a highly controversial new capital punishment law, targeting Palestinians convicted by Israeli courts of fatal terrorist attacks.

"It's another brick in the wall of our defence," the far-right chair of the parliamentary national security committee, Zvika Fogel tells me. "To bring in the death penalty is the most moral, the most Jewish and the most decent thing."

We Have Never Been Woke

Jan. 31st, 2026 05:31 am
[personal profile] ionelv
About one month ago, CBC Ideas covered one anti-woke crusader’s opinion. The interviewee, Musa al-Ghabri wrote a book on the topic: We Have Never Been Woke. While he might be partially correct in his diagnosis, his understanding of economics is quite unidimensional and myopic at best and malicious and grossly and hypocritically self-serving at worst:
As my sociology colleague Matthew Desmond showed in his book, Poverty, by America, of every dollar that's earmarked for the poor, only 25 cents of it actually gets to the poor. Symbolic capitalists eat 75 cents out of every dollar."

This amazon 1-star review summarizes the book:
Do not be fooled (as I was). While this book takes the form of a scholarly work, it is actually a long form opinion piece with all the intellectual rigor you would expect from... let's say, David Brooks. Its 315 pages of text are divorced from its 47 pages of end notes that are themselves separated from 55 pages of references to hide the fact that most of the sources are opinion pieces and soft news articles from various online publications. I finally reached my tipping point at Chapter 3, end note 150(!) where I was dubious enough about the concept of "woke fishing" that I pushed through the citation "Serena Smith 2020; Petrarca 2021" to discover that these were just articles from the The Verge and The Cut. That sparked a deeper look at the references and well... let's just say that there's a lot of hot garbage hidden behind the blasé format of scholarly citations. If this book had been written in good faith, I would have plenty to say about the shifting definitions, contradictory complaints, lack of understanding of economics, etc. (I will, however, still heap special shame on the argument that the increased self-reporting of bisexuality among women can be attributed to them not being able to find a man.) But, whatever other ends are being served by this book, it's not an honest, objective reporting of social trends. It's a pity—I was finding some of the stuff in the first 2 chapters to be interesting, but now that's all going in the trash along with this book. Will not be fooled (by Al-Gharbi, at least) again.

PS: After reading his own mini-autobiography, I found it quite hypocritical for him to say “do as I say, not as I do” about directly helping others while also making coin as a talking head full of performative actions and claiming some sort of new-found faith. If he is not an excellent example of a vacuous two-faced prosperity gospel exponent (of the Islamic variety for a change), I am stupider than I thought.

 To Pickle Oysters.

Take Oysters and wash them cleane in their own Liquor, and let them settle, then strain it, and put your Oysters to it with a little Mace and whole pepper, as much Salt as you please, and a little Wine-Vinegar, then set them over the fire, and let them boyle leisurely till they are pretty tender; be sure to skim them still as the skim riseth; when they are enough, take them out till the Pickle be cold, then put them into any pot that will lye close, they will keep best in Caper barrels, they will keep very well six weeks.
