So I had to take a break from posting because my eyes decided to act up (After a Deeply Stupid Eye Injury back in college, my left eye likes to throw the occasional tantrum to remind me it's got its eye on me, boyo) but I'm back with challenge #7.

Challenge #7

LIST THREE (or more) THINGS YOU LIKE ABOUT YOURSELF. They don’t have to be your favorite things, just things that you think are good. Feel free to expand as much or as little as you want.

Okay! Three things, huh? I'm going to go with one physical thing, one skill, and one emotional thing.

1. I try really hard to be kind.

Especially in the world we live in, where it's so easy to fall into snark, or into the trap of valuing nonexistent moral purity over imperfect action towards a better present and future, this is one of the things I like best about myself. So while I have certain bedrock principles I won't deviate from, I try very hard to give people grace, both IRL and in fandom. At the end of it, you've gotta be kind.

2. I am a good writer.

There's a Discord I'm in with a writing vent channel, and it always discomfits me a little to hear people tear their own writing down. Now, am I a literary great? Ha, nope. But I am a skilled writer, enough so that I enjoy rereading my own work, lol. Perhaps once Snowflake is over I'll create a self-rec list?

3. I like how my face looks.

So I grew up in a deeply colourist society, although I've been lucky in that my immediate family has never held with that or given me crap for it. What I didn't like about my face was that I don't have the kind of open-mouthed smile that is considered classically beautiful. (My teeth are fine, just small.) Add to that some baby fat that stubbornly stuck around, and nope. It took the pandemic, and seeing my face on Zoom for hours on end to realize that hey, just because I don't photograph well, it doesn't mean there aren't nice things about my face - how my eyes crinkle when I smile, how animated my expressions get when I'm excited about something, how well bright red lipstick contrasts with my dark skin. So yeah. It took a while, but I can safely say that I love my face.

I don't usually do yearly goals or whatever because I inevitably get bored and give up on them, but I think I'd at least like to make a list of things I'd ideally like to do for this year, and keep them in the back of my mind.

Here's what I've got:

1. Don't shop on Amazon, with an exception for a Kindle Unlimited sub if/when I get a discount offer
2. Buying used is preferable, when possible
3. $50/month allowance for books (paper or ebook)
4. Learn new skills (tbd)
5. Go on walks
6. Try something new/be open to new experiences ✨️
8. Don't worry about money

Friday, i managed to get ice off much of the deck and sidewalk. Deck's gonna need repainting and i think i will do it myself this time and address the issues that were not by the professional. (Eye roll). It was physically engaging, and i felt i'd had a real work out. The salt was impressive: while i didn't get rid of some of it in the driveway, i could rake and roughen the surface in a wa where i'd scattered salt that i couldn't elsewhere. Seeing the rusty salt on the white sleet-creet did give me opinions about my seed spreader: it definitely is not even. (But more even than hand casting.)  I just disappeared into a book after all the effort.

Yesterday morning Other Places were snowed in and we were in the "dry slot." My feelings churned around the changing travel, but around 12:30 snow started. By 4:45 pm we  had 1 7/8" of snow (measured using the recommended white board, which was then swept off), and it kept coming. This morning we have an additional 2 5/8" on the board, so that's a nice even 4.5" total

I hope i can relax today and also prep for the trip. I got a cancellation notice for the Sunday flight i had changed to Monday, but i've confirmed that i am booked Monday.

Duo fuckery continues apace: in addition to retroactively resetting users' progress through courses (i.e., I completed Indonesian unit 17 in December 2025. After completing two more Indonesian units last month I somehow find myself at the start of unit 17 as of February 1st), the app has started only registering lessons completed toward the daily quests after 15 minutes of engagement. As no doubt intended, this rankles from a "But I want to hit the gamification metrics!" perspective. From a language learning perspective, sustained engagement—not collecting merit badges—is what produces results, so maintaining a daily streak (regardless of whether or not the app logs it as such) is what I'm focused on.

The officialization of romaji

Feb. 1st, 2026 12:48 pm

Posted by Victor Mair

Japan might finally switch to romaji system you already use

Japan Today (June 30, 2025)

I've read many articles of this sort, but I cite this one because it is fairly recent and is from a reputable newspaper.

If you’ve spent any time learning Japanese or just getting around Japan, you’ve probably come across romaji — the Roman alphabet version of Japanese. It shows up on signs, maps, train stations and in most textbooks for foreign learners. But not all romaji is the same. Depending on where you look, you might see shi spelled as shi, si or even something else.

Romaji (ローマ字) means “Roman letters,” using the Latin alphabet to write Japanese sounds. It’s not a full writing system like hiragana or kanji, but it’s a useful bridge for learners and travelers who can’t yet read Japanese….

Japan has more than one romaji system — and now, for the first time in 70 years, the government is considering switching its official system to something more globally friendly.

Romanization is widely used in Japan, not least for entering text in digital devices.  What makes it seem not so ubiquitous is the fact that there are competing systems, one government sanctioned, and one used popularly by a large proportion of the public.

Japanese has a few romaji systems; the two big ones are Kunrei-shiki and Hepburn.

The Hepburn system was developed in 1867 by American missionary James Curtis Hepburn. His goal was to help English speakers pronounce Japanese more accurately, so Hepburn spells kana like し, ち, and つ as “shi,” “chi” and “tsu,” matching their actual sounds.

Japan officially adopted the Kunrei-shiki system in 1937 as the government’s standard. Kunrei-shiki spells Japanese sounds based on their arrangement in the kana alphabet rather than how they sound to English speakers.

For example, it writes し as “si,” ち as “ti,” and つ as “tu” because they belong to the “s” and “t” groups in the kana chart, even though they sound like “shi,” “chi” and “tsu.”

However, after World War II, the American occupation under General Douglas MacArthur preferred the Modified Hepburn system, seeing Kunrei-shiki as linked to Japan’s militaristic past. It was probably also way easier to read for him. Despite Kunrei-shiki remaining the official system taught in schools, Hepburn became the more common style used in daily life and public signage.

While the Kunrei-shiki structure is logical for native speakers and linguists, it can be confusing for anyone relying on English pronunciation. If you saw “tikatetu (subway)” on a sign, would you read it as “chikatetsu”? Probably not.

Though Kunrei-shiki (Cabinet-order style) has been the official, government-mandated romanization system in Japan since 1937, frequently used in school education, official documents, and by the National Diet Library. However, it is largely being replaced by the widely used Hepburn romanization system for international purposes, travel, and public signage. (AIO)

Why Japan Might Make Hepburn Official

While the Kunrei-shiki system remains the official government standard and is still taught in schools for grammar, it’s not the version most people encounter daily.

Instead, Hepburn is widely used in places designed for readability and especially where international communication is important, like train stations, maps and tourist spots. Even outside of Japanese schools, most native Japanese people use the Hepburn system. That gap between policy and everyday practice is why Japan’s Agency for Cultural Affairs is reviewing the rules.

In a recent draft proposal, a government panel recommended officially switching to Hepburn as the standard romanization system because the Kunrei-shiki has never really caught on with the general public, while Hepburn has become the de facto norm.

This would make spellings like “Tokyo” (instead of “Toukyou”) the standard because that’s how most people actually write and read Japanese these days. This should help clear up confusion and make getting around Japan easier for everyone.

If the government goes ahead with the switch, you’ll start seeing familiar Hepburn spellings become the official standard on everything from textbooks to prefectural names. In truth, foreigners may not notice a change at all—when was the last time someone texted you to meet at “Sinzyuku station” instead of Shinjuku station?

Something you might find shocking, that occurs smack dab at the conclusion of the introductory "History" section of the major Wikipedia article on the "Romanization of Japanese", is a brief account of rōmaji "As a replacement for the Japanese writing system" that has this striking sentence:

Today, the use of Nihon-shiki for writing Japanese is advocated by the Oomoto sect and some independent organizations.

What is the Oomoto sect?

Oomoto (大本, Ōmoto; lit. "Great Source" or "Great Origin"), also known as Oomoto-kyo (大本教, Ōmoto-kyō), is a religion founded in the 1890s by Deguchi Nao (1836–1918) and Deguchi Onisaburō (1871–1948). Oomoto is typically categorized as a Shinto-based Japanese new religion. The spiritual leaders of the movement have always been women within the Deguchi family….

As we have been learning during the last few weeks and months, women have been at the forefront of phonetic writing, not just in Japan, but in China and Korea as well.

All Japanese who have attended elementary school since World War II have been taught to read and write romanized Japanese. Therefore, almost all Japanese can read and write Japanese by using rōmaji.

Nearer to "home" for me, this story from St. Peter Minnesota about local cops actually blocking the kidnapping and murder squads from kidnapping someone made me have lots of feelings. All cops are bastards because it's the job and not the individual that sucks, but it's different in small towns. "It's believed to be the first time a local police department in Minnesota intervened in a federal law enforcement action since the surge in immigration enforcement began two months ago," the article says. And it's clearly because they were trying to kidnap someone whose husband knows the police chief (though that's easier in small towns), has a lawyer, knows that ICE aren't allowed to search his wife's car without a warrant. But it seems to have made a hell of an impression on that police chief; here's hoping it's able to affect his work and his colleagues for the better as well.

V watched a video about it (they follow a few YouTube streamers, including at least one who happens to live in Minnesota, so they're getting lots of video clips of this kind of stuff) and said an ICE agent was stomping up and down the road having a tantrum because he wasn't allowed to steal somebody.

Bring Her Bleeding Heart to Me
{ a dark femslash commentfic meme for femslash february }

Year eight! And ya ghoul's still using the promo graphics she made in 2018! Do not worry about it! You know the drill by now, February is a dreich month redeemed by the existence of Femslash February, let's celebrate our redemption from the weather by creating dark femslash! If we suffer our faves should suffer, or something like that, and also the purity brigade gets more annoying by the year.

Rules

  • You must be 18+ to participate

  • One prompt per comment.

  • Prompt comment subject lines should follow the format "Fandom - Ship - short description of prompt", for example "Fate: The Winx Saga - Farah/Rosalind - noncon somnophilia"

  • Fills should be posted as replies to the prompt comment, with subject lines following the format "FILL: Title - Rating", for example "FILL: in your dreams - Explicit"

  • 'Any Fandom', '[Canon character]/Any female character' and 'Any female character/Any female character' prompts are allowed'.

  • If filling an 'Any' prompt, fandom and/or ship names in the fill titles are appreciated but not mandatory

  • Warnings at the start of fills are appreciated but not mandatory. In fact, the entire comments section is a choose not to warn-friendly space.

  • Multiple fills and self-fills are both allowed.

  • Don't be a fuckwit. Kinkshaming, ship-bashing, and any other harassment will get you banned from my journal.

  • If you're banned from my journal you're also banned from this event.

FAQ
What can I prompt?
Any / relationship between two or more female characters, from any fictional canon(s). You cannot prompt rule 63. Female player characters from games where you choose the PC's gender (e.g. Mass Effect's Female Shepard) are allowed, canon alternate-universe female versions of main-universe male characters (e.g. Marvel Comics' Natasha Stark) are allowed.

How many prompts can I leave?
As many as you like, but each prompt must be its own comment.

Can I repost prompts from a previous year?
Yes.

Can I fill prompts from previous years without reposting them?
Sure, all previous posts are in the tag, and if you want people to see it you can link in this year's fills thread.

Are crossovers allowed?
Yes. Your prompt should make it clear which canons you're requesting, and which characters belong to which canons.

Is RPF allowed?
No, this fest is for fictional canons only. Fictionalised versions of real people (e.g. Anne/Ann from Gentleman Jack) are allowed. Kayfabe/in-character professional wrestlers are allowed. Idols and other musicians playing themselves in music videos are allowed.

What about original works?
No, but original female characters from any fandoms are more than welcome, in the form of '[Fandom] - [Canon character]/OFC' or '[Fandom] - OFC/OFC' prompts.

Is there an underage policy?
Prompt whatever you like. However, sexually explicit fills involving characters under the age of 16 need to be posted elsewhere and linked.

Do fills have to be fic?
No! Fanart, fanmixes, podfic (new or with the original author's permission), or pictures of your lovingly-crocheted Rey and Phasma dolls murdering each other are all great too.

Is there an AO3 collection?
Yes, over here, though posting is not a requirement and in the commentfic meme spirit of old I encourage you to also crosspost to your personal or fic journals. You're under no obligation to gift fanworks to the prompter, and prompters are free to reject fills - this is not an exchange. There is also a collection on Superlove thanks to [personal profile] luckyzukky! I'm not active on AO3 anymore and that collection is effectively unmoderated, but I do hang out on Superlove so give me a shout if something's up with that collection.

Can I use things I write for this to fill prompts in other events / combine prompts here with prompts in other events?
Yes, as long as the mods of that event are fine with cross-fills.

What makes fanworks dark?
I am borrowing [community profile] darkestnightex's definition, and saying it is "anything that deals with disturbing, violent, and/or depressing themes." Sexy body horror, gory murder, psychological manipulation, noncon, extreme angst, getting together in the aftermath of one character's attempted suicide, etc are all fair game, as are dark takes on traditionally-fluffy tropes such as soulmates. If you want inspiration for Situations to put your favourites in, [personal profile] summerofhorrorexchange has a fun list of horror subgenres with examples.

But that means there'll be problematic fic here!
Yes, that's the point, now take responsibility for your own internet life and go be somewhere else.

❤️ Stuff I Love: Top Ten Edition
February Challenge

February felt like the perfect time for a cosy, affectionate challenge — so here we are 💕

Accordingly, February's challenge, suggested by [personal profile] dreamersdare is the Stuff I Love: Top Ten Edition

Banner by [personal profile] pushkin666  adapted from[personal profile] corvidology's original, very awesome, graphic.

The aim is simple and warm:

✨ Make a list of ten things you love.
✨ Celebrate the big, the small, the accidental, the obvious, the silly, the profound.
✨ No rules beyond love — only joy.

So how does this challenge work?

Each week in February, you are challenged to write a themed top ten list, with a focus on different aspects of media.

Week 1 (February 1st-7th): Standalone media (e.g. films, novels, short stories, plays)
Week 2 (February 8th-14th): Series (e.g. TV shows, webtoons, comics, web serials)
Week 3 (February 15th-21st): Music picks (e.g. bands, artists, songs, music videos)
Week 4 (February 22nd-28th): Relationships in our media (e.g. platonic, shippy, familial, canon, fannish)

[personal profile] dreamersdare will host a challenge post every Sunday with more detail on the prompt. HERE IS THE FIRST ONE. However, if the prompt doesn't inspire you, the wildcard rule applies in that you can generate your own top ten list.

How to take part?
  • Post your list here on Dreamwidth anytime in February.
  • Tag it or link back to [personal profile] dreamersdares original post so others can find you 💖
  • Any format is welcome: bullet points, numbered list, prose, rambling commentary, gifs, images, or pure vibes
  • Feel free to explain why you love each thing — or don’t. Both are valid.
You can post once, or revisit the list throughout February if your loves shift (as they often do)

There’s no pressure, no judgement, and no “right” answers — just a chance to pause and notice what’s making life a little brighter right now.

Can you believe it?

I've actually "caught up" (to a degree)...

I know there's a horde of entries over the last few years that were only ever semi-finished, or never had a photo added to them (if one existed).

But in terms of the last few months of getting behind because of working, sleeping, procrastination, and depression, I have succeeded in making a journal entry for the actual day - today!

Let's see how long I can continue.

It certainly helped that being changed to a standby shift yesterday, as well as being on standby today (I started at 3.51pm) helped.

But nothing else in iCal, and no photos actually taken today... so here's one from the other day, doing my last drive of a V Set.

My last ever drive

Toot, toot!

Well, that was unexpected...

Today's shift SHOULD have started at 12.52pm.

I remember my alarm going off at 10.10am, and I SWEAR I hit "Snooze" on my watch.

And the next thing, I wake up again, wondering why the NEXT alarm hadn't gone off (I always have 2 set), and saw that the time was 12.42pm. I was starting work in ten minutes.

Needless to say, THAT wasn't going to happen, so I rang them straight away, so they could cover my run, and then hurriedly got ready to get to work - about an hour late.

My entire shift was just taking a train from Blacktown to Lithgow - all the rest was travelling as a passenger. So it was pretty easy for them to cover.

And then when I arrived, I was an "extra standby", ready to cover a run should the same or similar thing happen to anyone else...

But it didn't.

So I caught up on LiveJournal / Dreamwidth entries.

Here's a little pic of David... caught in a moment of confusion... LOL
