Some police forces continue to behave as if they are outwith any reasonable accountability, covering badge numbers, preventing filming, even by credentialed journalists, as they go far beyond reasonable force. American law should apply equally, whether one is black or white, civilian or police officer. Governments derive their just powers from the consent of the governed. It is to the credit of the protesters that they demand fairness despite the risk from both the police themselves and the unchecked pandemic.

When I studied counterinsurgency, one thing I learned is that the violence can be worse at the good turning points, when the fighters realize that they are losing yet they try to hold on. For a couple of reasons, white supremacists may fear that they are on course to lose political power, perhaps that makes them act more desperately now. I hope that the backlash against them cements the will of elected representatives to compel reform, to ensure proper oversight, to join their voters in rejecting a descent into fascism.
