Correcting my inadequate parenting
May. 6th, 2018 04:03 pmIt has come time again that I am looking to address my past failure to cause my children to swim well or to know any self-defense. Both activities seem useful things that local councils and whatnot ought generally encourage. The summer is coming and I imagine that the break will expand the options for being able to actually get them to a relevant class on time.
I am finding the exercise even more frustrating than last time: changes include that one Dundee-sited provider of classes now offers less information online than last time I was looking and that the classes I can actually find all seem to be booked up or already happened. Vague talk of booking blocks of ten classes does not encourage me regarding compatibility with the academic year.
In short, despite being willing to pay and to find some way to get my children to probably anywhere within an hour's drive so long as it doesn't cut into their school time, so far I am not finding it easy to arrange either swimming or self-defense. It is too soon to give up for another year but I am disappointed that it is not simply a case of looking at local council websites and see when and where things happen and booking accordingly. Some unproductive telephone conversations may be in my future.
I improved my swimming by reading a book, just as I much improved my punting (propelling flat-bottomed boats with a pole) by drawing and considering the force diagrams. I may yet have to employ the last resort of making my children read the swimming book and just taking them to the pool myself to attempt to apply the information. Though, timing may then prove crucial: public pools rarely offer a useful halfway house between lap swimming and random people aimlessly getting in the way of any purposeful movement. I am also not about to attempt to teach self-defense myself.
