I think many parts of England don't vote on anything very exciting this week but we have Holyrood, the reconvened Scottish Parliament, to elect. This weekend I will actually have to learn what the current manifestoes are; note that the Scottish versions of the parties tend to be distinct from those about which the national news tends to report. My algorithm is basically to rule parties out based on issues for which I can't bear to help them with a mandate then see what I most like among whoever is left.
It's at least easier here than in the US. I recently waived my right to overseas-vote on a small town's board of cemetery commissioners. Even at county level it was hard to find out much about the candidates for coroner and whatnot though perhaps I was unusual for even trying.
Update: It turned out to take more work than I had expected to end up with a summary of all who are standing and what their actual policies are as distilled from the vacuous fluff.
