Observations on the M6
Feb. 20th, 2016 07:27 pmYesterday we had cause to take a day-trip to a Lancashire village. A couple of things came to my notice while driving on the motorway:
At times it felt a little surreal to be driving. In the wind, rain and heavy traffic at night I could mostly see taillights through the spray. With the meandering path of the road it sometimes felt as if I were flying through clouds among these other shining vehicles.
Some of the trailers carrying abnormal loads are enthusiastically lit indeed. There was one point in Cumbria at which, with other vehicles, I just slowed down and hung back a bit until I could tell quite what it was that we had stumbled onto. With so many lights, many flashing, it was if the aliens had sent a large craft to interact with us.
For some stretches the dot-matrix signs with flashing corner lights notified us of a drop in speed limit to 50mph from the default 70mph. This appeared to have no effect whatsoever on the actual traffic speed. I was reminded of some stretches of freeway in rural Pennsylvania and New York where to adhere to the posted 55mph limit is to hazardously obstruct the flow of traffic.
