US absentee voting from the EU under GDPR

For the midterms I mentioned a couple of weeks ago about finding out more about the candidates on my ballot paper even though these days the Republican candidates would need to look really good in comparison with the others. Rather longer ago I had mentioned how at county level it can be hard to find out much about some of the candidates. This time around that is true for even some of the state-level candidates, especially for those from minor parties: I have written much more here about my position on issues than exists on the typical campaign website.

However, since moving to Scotland then the General Data Protection Regulation coming into force, I find it even harder than usual to research candidates for US elections. For example, if I try to dig into some past scandal then I find that some of the local news sources detect that I am connecting from the European Union and refuse to show me any webpages at all. Fortunately third-party web caches got me far enough to be reasonably confident in my selections.
