COVID-19 lives under the rug

I experience ongoing dissonance. On the one hand, I read of abundant SARS-CoV-2 infection, reinfection, mutation, increasing clear incidence of long COVID, etc. On the other hand, nobody's wearing a mask and life continues as if it were the Before Times. It's unusual for me to have the sense of joining the Cassandras.

Yeah, in recent days, I failed to convince some folk here on Dreamwidth who claimed my sars2.org website was "misinformation", because each individual point's linked citation does not sufficiently meet their standards. *sigh* I know they don't. Nobody can at this still-early stage. That's why I build the pattern to show the mechanisms at work. It seems obvious to me that the pieces are there, even if they don't yet sufficiently flow as a single causal narrative.

My best guess is that we're using different kinds of proof that don't work well together. Remember that video showing 3 squares (3 units wide, 4 units wide, and 5 units wide) on a disk? Rotating the disk then empties the 3 and 4 square fluids fully into the 5 square box. If you're arguing based on that wide-perspective visual signal, then it just doesn't translate immediately to the algebraic step-by-step micro-proof of the Pythagorean theorem.

I think that's how we're talking past each other, unconvincingly. The full pandemic pattern isn't there until lots of people (a lot more than now) are dead, but some people just don't see that pattern emerging. They need the authoritative (and an authority figure helps... Dr Fauci) justification for the connection between each step of the process.

My blood pressure is through the roof. (Tested yesterday. It was very bad, like Stage 2 bad. Unlike in previous months.) I've got to find a way to stop shouting "fire" when my impulse is to shout "fire".

I hope I'm wrong at the pandemic. I'm sure my blood pressure would go down, if someone can show that I'm wrong.

Most of my neighbouring transit users are masking up. Not so much in the malls, which deeply troubles me right now.

Yeah, I feel we've missed the opportunity to make "living with Covid" into something like "everyone uses mitigation methods like outdoors, masks, ventilation" rather than "we pretend Covid doesn't exist, and it kills a bunch of people" :(

People forgot that the thing about Cassandra was that her prophecies were disbelieved but entirely accurate...

I saw my immunologist Monday, he said there's a total of about 120 Covid hospitalizations in the entire state of NM! Pretty remarkable. I don't know what the total number of infections are, but at least the hospitalization rate is very manageable. And I guess the availability of the drug they're using is pretty good as long as you can get a positive test result early enough for it to be effective. I've done a double-dose of Evusheld since I'm immune compromised, which theoretically gives me pretty good protection for nine months, so I'll probably be re-upped on that before October, and they'll probably have an updated mix of that by then to account for the newer strains of Omicron.

Absolutely agree!  Long-haul Covid is pretty terrifying!  Not to mention brain fog for those of us who especially work with our noggins!

I feel this right along with you.

I, too, am worried about what long COVID will mean to our population as a whole. (Also, I apparently tried to attach this comment in all sorts of weird places, so if this is duplicated anywhere, feel free to delete!)
