Grocery store conveyor belts

Checking out at Tesco today I watched the conveyor belt jerking the groceries about. I was surprised and disappointed that the technology appears to remain so very primitive despite having had many decades to mature. Is it really beyond our wit to have developed a cheap way for the belt's motion to more smoothly start and stop? In the meantime I continue to lay my groceries such that they are likely to withstand the abrupt speed changes without toppling over and rolling away.

It seems to vary. The one at Aldi is so jerky one cannot possibly stack bottles on it upright, but I've used some where that's quite viable.
