A decent Cornish pasty

Yesterday I risked a traditional Cornish pasty at The Cornish Bakery at Annandale Water services on the A74(M) in Scotland. This is the kind of food that I try with more curiosity than hope, rather like ordering authentically English fish and chips in the US. Auguring poorly was that it was the kind of Cornish bakery that sells pain au chocolat but not saffron buns.

It turns out that I was visiting The Cornish Bakery's most northerly location. They have various locations around Cornwall itself but the business wasn't familiar to me partly because they focus on towns frequented by tourists rather than residents. Their Cornish pasty was a pleasant surprise: I judged it to be acceptable, certainly better than those prepackaged things supplied by Ginsters to grocery stores.

Less pleasantly surprising was the Coke from McDonald's. I am all for not giving the sea creatures a miserable death but if we must use paper straws then I prefer to be provided a variety that maintains structural integrity for the typical duration of the drink.

I grew up with paper straws, and I have to tell you, I find all the whining about them very amusing. (grin)

They always did that, but when I was a child, plastic straws didn't exist. I remember it was a particular issue when drinking milk. And yet, we survived. (grin)
