Attitudes to American politics
Last Fall with the fuss about Justice Kavanaugh I complained here about behavior in Congress going back more than twenty years. I framed it in terms a loss of integrity and trust, that cost being paid in the service of narrow interests. Some of us are outraged, others rather less so. In being troubled by the disrespect for what I suppose comes down to truth and fairness it occurs to me that it was probably naive of me not to more greatly credit the possibility that many voters still approve of many acts of American governance simply because they consider the ends to justify the means: they care less about the process so long as they agree with the outcome. Inasmuch as reality impinges at all and sins aren't falsely made equivalent, perhaps the hypocrisy can be brazen because many supporters don't mind it. That kind of attitude feels very wrong to me but it may often be effective.
