Sinks and hygiene

To my surprise one disappointment I've had in returning to the UK is the sinks. If my hands need washing then I rather like to be able to rub them together vigorously under clean running water. However, even given that though the faucets are often separate I am fine having to use cold water, and even if it's a manual faucet rather than one of the many awful automatic ones that need me to guess quite the correct position and movement to keep it running (at work it's an awkward position with fingers pointing straight down), the spout is usually too short so the water falls right next to the edge of the bowl and there isn't even room for me to properly fit my hands underneath the flow in a way that permits me to actually wash them well. Perhaps it's a cultural difference and I'm meant to fill the small bowl, except there's rarely a good way to stop the drain properly anyway.
