Variable garden gate

At the side of our house is the gate to the back yard. It has the usual bolt and latch arrangement: one half on the wooden gate, the other on a wooden post fixed into the ground beside it, next to the wall of the house. However, the two parts of the bolt-and-latch were at very different heights. I measured and marked, obtained new screws, and adjusted the height of one side so they matched and I could keep the gate closed without the aid of a rock.

Then, the two parts were again at very different heights. Having discovered their variability I wasn't sure how next to proceed so I left them as they were for the meantime, during which they appear to have moved such that their heights again match. Perhaps it is a matter of deciding during which season I would like to be able to lock the gate.
