Media delivery reimagined

When we had cable television, with much bundled content in which we had no interest, I did some cursory and naive research and gained the impression that if I were simply to pay for episodes enough to give the creators and promoters a reasonable profit, the cost would actually be reasonable: a kind of iTunes model perhaps. These days we have Amazon and Hulu and Netflix and whatnot attempting to attract us to their separate bundled services with exclusive content, but now we routinely use streaming anyway it should be perfectly possible to allow us to buy even individual episodes of series a la carte.

I am disappointed that the business model appears to be remaining one of monthly subscriptions for access to content en bloc, albeit perhaps with households subscribing now to multiple separate services that individually are rather cheaper than a regular cable bill. The good shows are sufficiently dispersed across services that I doubt that any has much I'd want to watch. I don't know enough about the industry to be able to guess if someday I may be able to pay only for what I actually consider worthwhile but for now I'll content myself with patient hope.

In the meantime, I hope that by-mail DVD rental services continue to exist, and shows continue to typically come out fairly promptly on DVD, so I can use them as a cheap way to watch a wide range of shows of my choice, as I don't mind watching them at a slow rate and after everybody else. And, patience pays off: even the Israeli Prisoners of War came out on DVD in the UK in the end, though I'm still waiting for The Gordin Cell.
